Update News-Jubaland releases list of candidates for Upper House as polls stall.

Kismayo(HNN):-The president of Jubbaland, Ahmed Mohamed Islam (Ahmed Madobe), officially submitted the list of candidates running for the upper house of the Somali parliament on Tuesday.

The Jubbaland Electoral Implementation Committee has thanked the President of Jubbaland for submitting the list of candidates for the Upper House of the Somali Parliament.

Meanwhile, the Jubbaland Electoral Implementation Committee has released a timetable for the election of the Upper House of the Federal Parliament from the Jubbaland state.

The committee announced that candidates could begin registration for the Upper House of Parliament on Wednesday. The candidates  will be able to make their pitches to the Jubaland State Parliament on Thursday before voting commences later that day.

Somalia’s Upper House will comprise of 54 Senators from all the regional member states. They will be voted in by state MP’s.

A spokesperson for PM Roble – who is in London for a global summit on education – said that he commended Jubaland for the progress and urged Somalia’s other regional states to follow suit.

Somalia’s indirect election of lawmakers was expected to begin Sunday with the selection of the Upper House. Still, it was delayed as regional parliaments did not yet submit their lists of candidates.

The federal election implementation committee chair, Mohamed Hassan Irro, said that the setback was a slight delay and insisted that the polls are still on track.

No new date was set for the Somali upper house elections.
